The on-board unit (OBU) is a hybrid electronic technical device enabling the unambiguous identification and position of a vehicle by an electronic toll system without stopping the vehicles (systems without toll gates).

for positioning (GNSS: GPS, GLONASS and GALILEO) – ensures the collection of data on the use of defined road sections
GSM / GPRS technology
for communication within mobile networks – serves for data transmission between the on-board unit and other information systems within the electronic toll system
Microwave DSRC technology
for short distance communication – serves to control toll payers as part of the toll collection control process
